Recent changes to the Reddit API have sent shockwaves through the Reddit community and its various third-party apps.

These changes have sparked protests, blackouts of subreddits, and even the permanent shutdown of some popular applications.

Relay for Reddit free version shutting down

One such casualty is the free version of ‘Relay for Reddit’, a widely used Reddit client, which is now shutting down due to the API modifications (1,2,3,4,5,6,7).

The discussion surrounding these API changes began with a post on the r/RelayForReddit subreddit, where the official announcement was made.

The developer of Relay for Reddit, Dave highlighted how the current API alterations would significantly impact the functionality of the app. He expressed deep concerns about the future of the application in light of the API changes.

The core issue at the center of the controversy is the recently introduced pricing policy for the Reddit API which means it’s no longer viable for Relay for Reddit to continue in its free state.

Reddit even faced backlash from Apollo users after it was revealed that the company was charging a whopping $20 million for access to their API.

With Relay for Reddit joining the list of affected applications, the implications of the API changes are becoming increasingly evident.

Uninstalled today so I would browse reddit less. I do 90% of my reddit usage on mobile. Not gonna install the official mobile app. Hopefully reddit will pull their heads out and provide API access for a modest fee instead of an exorbitant fee. It’s been real, thanks u/dbrady you made a good app!

Dave also shared that with a monthly subscription price of $3 (or less), it might be achievable to keep the app alive.

However, in a further blow to users, NSFW content would no longer be accessible within the app even with a subscription model.

This restriction on adult-oriented content has disappointed several users(1,2,3) who value the freedom and diversity of content that Reddit provides.

Honestly I might have considered this if it wasn’t for the nsfw ban, paying a for a neutered version of reddit with less content just rubs me the wrong way. Also, a lot of people use the nsfw tag a bit too liberally so a lot of things that arent actually nsfw will be unavailable

The protests and blackouts on subreddits demonstrate the strength of sentiment against the changes.

These actions aim to draw attention to the potential negative consequences that these alterations can have on the Reddit ecosystem.

It is important for Reddit to listen to the concerns of its users and developers and engage in open dialogue to find a solution that balances the platform’s interests with the needs and desires of the community.
