[Update: Still a mess] Should Google consider making Android 12 share menu suggestions customizable?

Google’s Android operating system is the most used mobile platform in the world. With a market share of somewhere around 73 percent in June of 2021, it is clear that the OS will dominate in the foreseeable future.

The company has constantly changed everything there is to Android in the last couple of years. But there’s one thing that has remained constant throughout all these years, and that’s the Android Share menu.

And the Share Menu on Android is honestly a complete mess. For years, people have been complaining to Google that the algorithm of the share menu suggestions needs to change.

But Google seems to have turned a blind eye to the problem. Instead of suggesting users’ actions based on their usage, Android is adamant about suggesting random contacts and apps.

While the first row in the menu is supposed to show contacts you are in touch frequently, Android often shows up random people from applications users haven’t used for quite a while.

It is the same case with the third row. Instead of presenting users with a list of apps they can use to share, the OS thinks it’s better to show multiple options for the same app while the most used apps seem to have just one or two entries.

Having said that, the company has the perfect opportunity to start afresh with Android 12.

Since Material You is designed to adapt to the user’s needs, it will be even better if Google decides to ditch the current Share Menu suggestions in favor of something that works along the lines of the upcoming theme engine.

For quite some time, users have bypassed the default share menu by making use of third-party solutions such as Sharedr, But it looks like the future is dark for apps like these since Android 12 will not allow third-party apps to replace the default Android Sharesheet.

But before it does that, the very question Google should ask itself is why such apps exist in the first place.

We think that Google should have done a reality check before making such a move and allow users to customize it according to their preferences.
