Pokemon Go players are reporting that the in-game NPC Mateo is not appearing in the game. The developers are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. In the meantime, here are some workarounds mentioned below.
Pokemon Go Mateo not appearing at the Gym
Mateo is a new character in Pokémon GO introduced as part of the “Along the Routes” event. He is an affable researcher who appears at the end of Routes and loves to pick up and exchange Gifts as he travels the world.
To find and exchange a gift with Mateo, you must walk to the end of a Route, and Mateo can appear at the final PokéStop. When a player completes a Route, Mateo may be waiting for the player at the endpoint, and he’ll ask if they’d like to participate in a Gift Exchange.
If the player agrees, they will receive a Gift from another Trainer, and the player can pin the Postcard attached to that Gift to make progress toward their Vivillon Collector.
Mateo can appear only once per day at the end of any Route, but according to reports, in some instances, Mateo doesn’t appear at the end of the route if the endpoint is a Gym. However, tapping the gym may prompt a gift exchange.
Official acknowledgement and workarounds
With the reports piling up, the issue soon caught the attention of the developers who said that the team is currently investigating the issue and may issue an update soon.
Till the official solutions, here’s a workaround shared by a player that reportedly worked for them:
- Start a route.
- Spin the Pokestop/gym that is the starting point of the route.
- Finish the route by reaching the endpoint.
- When reached at the endpoint, click on the gym/Pokestop and spin it. You should get Mateo’s dialogue.
Another workaround that was also shared is restarting the game, which may also solve the issue.
In the end, these are unofficial workarounds, so the results may not be as expected every time.
