Plex is one of the few media streaming services that enables users to play digital content from one machine to another. Over the years, the developers have added several new features to the app.

Users can either opt for the free service that lets them stream content from their personal library or Plex’s paid service and access content from MGM, Lionsgate, and Warner Bros amongst several others.

But lately, issues such as broken fast forward and rewind function and Plex Media server crashing after the v1.26.0.5715 update are preventing many from using the app.

Adding to the woes, Plex users who updated the app to v1.44.0 on their Mac say they are seeing a grey or blank screen and are unable to do anything.

Some have already tried reinstalling the app but that isn’t helping either. Many are confused and wondering if the developers test the app before releasing the update.

Here are some reports from Plex users who are stuck on a grey or blank screen on their Mac after the v1.44.0 update.

After auto-upgrade to latest version of Plex for Mac player, after launch I am getting stuck on a grey screen with no ability to do anything (see attached screen shot) after the Plex logo is displayed. I tested on a secondary machine running same version and did not have the same issue. The only difference between the two is “Automatically sign in” was check (set to yes/true) on the computer presenting the issue – my gut tells me this has something to do with it, as I have seen this “glitch” before, but was always able to resolve by restarting.

Ditto. Uninstalled manually everything from the library related to Plex. Restarted. Installed fresh player 1.44.0.2981. Grey screen, cannot do anything. Preferences do not even appear. Random clicks don’t appear to do anything. MacPro 6,1 with OS 10.14.6.

While Plex developers are yet to comment on the matter, we came across a workaround that seems to be helping those affected by the problem.

It requires users to uninstall the latest version, installing the v1.34 and overwriting it with v1.43. You can download the required packages here.

That said, I WAS finally able to get it working by first wiping everything, then finding an old installer package for Plex-1.34.1.2601-ff212e16-x86_64. This worked, but would crash after about 2 minutes, every time. I then found an package for Plex-1.43.4.2971-aa2133cc-x86_64, overwrote v. 1.34, and it’s currently working. I’d like to get back up to the version prior to 1.44.0.02981, but am afraid to rock the boat…
