If you are someone who stores a lot of digital media, then you might have heard of Plex. It is an app that allows users to share their content with other devices hassle-free.

The service also features more than 200 free channels and over 50,000 on-demand titles. It also has a paid subscription service that includes mobile sync, fetching metadata, parental controls, and many more features.

A few days ago, Plex users complained about the iOS app crashing or freezing after the v7.27 update.

Having said that, Plex users are now reporting (1,2,3,4,5) that the iOS app is slow or unresponsive at times. While some say it takes a lot of time before the app responds to their commands, others say it does not work half the time.

Users say they tried restarting the app and their iOS device, but it does not help. It looks like the issue surfaced after the v7.28.1 update.

It takes 9 minutes for the UI to become normally responsive. I opened Plex, watched the logo jank in hard, tapped my profile, and then waited a minute for it to move to the pin screen. I tapped the numbers of my pin, and then watched the clock: 3 mins until the first number showed the “highlight” color that I even pressed it. This is the stuff that is normally lightning fast even when my server is down. I could give my suspicions about what it is, but the Main Thread is clearly messed up hard when the highlight color shows up 3 mins late (took another 5 mins to get to a usable Movies screen).

When opening Plex on the iPad, it takes about a minute or more for the app to register that I tapped the screen to select a movie or TV show to watch. Resetting the iPad does not help. At the top left of the iPad screen, next to the Wifi status, the “loading circle” is continuously circling after I press to get to load the folder of a particular show or movie. I typically wait about a minute, sometimes longer. Once playing the TV show or movie, I have no issue. This has been happening since the latest update of the iPad app, no issue two weeks ago. I have no issues on my laptop, desktop, Roku, or FireTV stick.

Looking at the reports, it looks like the problem is limited to the iOS version of the app since other platforms seem to be working just fine.

While Plex developers are yet to say anything about the issue, we came across a workaround that involves uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

The app has been totally unusable for me too. I uninstalled/reinstalled and it is working now. Thanks to the advise here. I don’t know how well, but it at least Ioads now. Thanks everyone!
