For months now, several Waze users have been facing an issue where the voices set for some alerts are changing on their own with no apparent explanation, causing confusion among the community. That said, it seems that the bug is already under investigation by the dev team.

According to reports, the Waze alerts most affected by the ‘changing voices’ bug are those for red lights and nearby speed cameras. For example, if you set the ‘Jane’ option (one of the available voices), you may receive alerts for the situations mentioned above in a man’s voice.

But not only that, as even the tone of the phrases changes to a much more informal one, which can be fun if you change it on purpose but can lead to uncomfortable situations if they just suddenly arise. For instance, when detecting a nearby speed camera, you might receive an alert saying ‘Speed camera reported ahead, let’s hyperfocus our impact, by which I mean slow down’, or something like the following:

Sadly, there is no workaround that will help resolve the issue once it appears beyond completely disabling this type of alert from the Waze app settings. However, thanks to a forum moderator in Waze subreddit, we now know that the dev team is working on a fix for the issue, but with no ETA in sight yet.

Reports indicate that the bug has been present since at least November 2023, so let’s hope that it won’t take long for the Waze team to send a definitive fix that allows voice alerts to be used normally again.
