In recent years, most Android smartphone manufacturers have been investing heavily in photography. Vivo is one of those manufacturers that, through its ‘Vivo X’ lineup, usually offers devices where the cameras are the main attraction, even with the help of ZEISS for this. The company launched the Vivo X100 series in November 2023, among which the Vivo X100 Pro stands out especially.

The X100 series will be available in Europe in the coming weeks, and before that, DxOMark (known for its photography benchmarks for smartphone cameras) has put the Vivo X100 Pro’s photography capabilities to the test. Although its results are of a very high level, DxOMark concludes that the overall result is not enough to beat the Pixel 8 Pro cameras, taking 8th place in the ranking (tied with the OPPO Find X6).

The camera configuration of the X100 Pro is composed of a 50 MP main sensor (1/0.98″, f/1.8 aperture, OIS, laser AF), a 50 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor (f/2.0 aperture, FOV 119°), and a 50 MP periscopic telephoto sensor (4.3x optical zoom, OIS). Although all the lenses gave excellent results during the tests, the device especially shone in the zoom section. In fact, the platform claims that the device has the best periscopic sensor in the smartphone industry, a remarkable achievement.

According to the reviewer, the high quality of the periscopic lens of the device is thanks in part to its wide aperture that allowed it to obtain detailed photos with controlled noise even in low-light conditions, which is usually a challenge for this type of sensor. In the zoom section, the device proves to be noticeably above both its predecessor (Vivo X90 Pro) and the iPhone 15 Pro Max whose zoom quality disappoints in comparison.

Although there is no direct comparison, the device’s results also put it above the Pixel 8 Pro in telephoto lens tests. However, Google’s latest flagship surpasses it in other camera-related departments, such as the quality of the main sensor’s photos and video recording, which is why it emerges as the winner in the overall ranking (150 points vs. 153 points).

So, the Pixel 8 Pro continues to demonstrate Google’s expertise in computational photography, being able to directly compete with the best photography smartphones in the industry, even outperforming them in multiple cases.
