It seems that multiple Google Pixel phones, including the latest flagships Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, were experiencing camera crashing issues in certain situations. Fortunately, the latest January 2024 Pixel security update has addressed this along with some UI-related bugs.

January 2024 update fixes camera crashing on Pixel 8 series and others

A few hours ago, the January 2024 update rollout for Google Pixel devices commenced. This patch primarily emphasizes enhancing stability rather than introducing new features. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that this update may have addressed a persistent and bothersome issue experienced by certain Google Pixel device users.

The official changelog for the update includes the following:

  • Fix for users facing Camera crashes in certain conditions (Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro)

Although Google does not specify the conditions under which the camera app was crashing on Pixel 8 and older series, multiple users have been reporting two main situations for months: while zooming and while taking many photos continuously.

Taking into account the changelog, it is possible that at least one of these problems (or both) have finally been fixed after installing the latest Pixel January 2024 update, which would be very good news for users. After all, cameras are one of the main selling points of Google Pixel devices (especially on the latest Pixel 8 series), so experiencing crashes while taking pics must be quite frustrating.

Some UI stability fixes for Pixel 8 series

The update in question also brings fixes related to system UI stability for the Google Pixel 8 series, and even for the Pixel Tablet as well. The official changelog mentions the following:

  • Fix for users facing flashing black screen when playing video in certain conditions (Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8)
  • Fix for Wallpaper on home screen showing black in certain conditions (Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8, Pixel Tablet)

So, if you are a user of a Pixel 8 series device or Google’s first tablet and you are experiencing some of these bugs, installing the latest update should fix them.
