A growing discussion on Reddit points to a potential design issue in Google Pixel 6 series phones where some users are reporting that a black spot is forming in the corners of the screen. While some attribute these spots to accidental drops, others claim the issue occurs even with careful handling — suggesting that we could be looking at a potential hardware problem.

Below is how the black spot looks like:

The debate surrounding the cause of these black spots is raging on in the r/GooglePixel subreddit. Some theorize that the OLED display encapsulation may be compromised potentially due to drops or impacts. Others, especially those in the phone refurbishment industry, believe the issue likely stems from a design flaw in how the screen adheres to the phone’s frame. Apparently, the Pixel 6 has a small gap that allows dirt to accumulate over time, eventually causing pressure damage to the delicate screen.

The issue lies in the way the screen is designed to adhere to the phone’s body – it is held in place by a tiny and delicate plastic frame that does not adequately protect the exposed and delicate OLED screen underneath, leaving the edges of the screen exposed to a gap where dirt accumulates over time from normal use. Eventually, this buildup exerts pressure and damages the screen.

While the majority of reports are from Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners, a smaller number of Pixel 7 owners are also reporting similar experiences. The extent of these cases could indeed point to a potential hardware flaw in the design of the phones, but this remains speculation at this point. Google has yet to officially comment on the situation, but at least the discussion has caught the attention of the Pixel support team on Reddit.

It’s unclear whether these are isolated incidents or if there’s a broader manufacturing issue affecting specific Pixel 6 batches. But the fact that the problem has been reported for nearly two years potentially adds weight to the possibility of the claimed design flaw.

If you notice black spots developing on the corners of your Pixel 6 screen, it’s crucial to contact Google support. Whether or not your phone is within warranty may determine your options for a repair or replacement, but this doesn’t mean you should be silent about it.

User discussions and reports of issues like this play a vital role in holding manufacturers accountable and potentially leading to improvements in future product designs. If you’re experiencing a similar screen issue with your Google Pixel 6, sharing your experience online and reaching out to Google support can help shed more light on this problem.
