On February 1, 2023, Microsoft updated its cloud storage policy for Microsoft 365 apps and services, including Outlook’s attachments data and OneDrive data.

After this change, users’ cloud storage quota has gotten reduced. And to rub salt in the wounds, one’s ability to send and receive emails in Outlook and Hotmail will get disrupted, if they exceed the storage limit.

However, it looks like this change has not been well received by users.

Outlook and Hotmail users unable to send or receive emails

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple Outlook and Hotmail users are facing an issue where they are unable to send or receive emails on their email accounts.

Apparently, some are even unable to do so after having cleared their inbox storage of unimportant or irrelevant emails.

Due to this, many end up missing out on important conferences, invoices, or office meetings which is understandably quite frustrating.

This happens as after the recent policy change it might take 24 to 48 hours for the system to process your storage information.

This is also a piece of bad news for all those who need to access any urgent information related to the flight they have booked or a planned trip.

I can not receive or send email because One drive is full. My one drive is full over 5GB but my email is only 2.6GB out of 15GB yet I cannot use my email. Why is it using my One drive quota for my email?

I have deleted a ton of emails and I have created rules to keep the unnecessary emails from taking space in my inbox. I need my emails to start coming through as normal.

Some users claim to have contacted customer care executives in this regard. However, even they were unable to offer consumers with information that would assist them in resolving the issue.

So, we recommend the Outlook and Hotmail users to delete any unnecessary emails and create filters to discard any unimportant emails automatically. Doing so might help you avoid such a situation in the future.

Having said that, we’ll keep tabs on this topic and update this article with noteworthy information.
