The smart wearable ecosystem is beginning to pick up pace as the operating systems that they’re based on continue to mature. The Apple Watch is a must-have for anyone in the Apple ecosystem and the current market gold-standard. While we’ve seen a number of hits and misses with its Android counterparts, that too seems to be changing for the better.

Most recently, we have seen Oppo dip its toes into this form factor with the launch of the Oppo Watch. Launched earlier this year, this Wear OS-powered smartwatch offers so much for the price, its obvious Apple Watch inspiration notwithstanding.

Being based on Google’s Wear OS, the Oppo Watch comes heavily integrated into the Google and Android ecosystem. It uses the Google Play Store and other Google Services like Google Pay are equally supported.

This integration is even heavily advertised on Oppo Watch’s official product page.

Wear OS by Google is loaded with convenient features and designed to help you maximize your time. Explore hundreds of apps on Google Play to get things done faster¹. Stream music, reply to messages, and check news headlines. Make payments on the go with Google Pay, get answers from Google Assistant, and track workouts and fitness goals with Google Fit.

Sadly, it now appears as though users of the Oppo Watch in India are going to miss out on one of the more useful features of the smart wearable.

When asked by a user on Twitter why GPay is not available through the Oppo Watch’s Google Play Store, Oppo India’s official Twitter confirms that indeed, the Oppo Watch does not support Google Pay.

It remains unclear why exactly this is the case. Could it be that the version of Oppo Watch sold in India does not have the necessary hardware needed to support Google Pay? Is this due to regulatory approval? Is this support going to be added at a later point? We still don’t have the answer to any of these questions.

Recently, we saw reports of Google Pay credit & debit cards getting support in India for some Android & Wear OS users. Could the Oppo Watch get this feature sometime down the line?

For now though, if you’re in the market for a smartwatch in India and Google Pay integration is important to you, you might want to strike the Oppo Watch from your list.

We shall continue to keep an eye on this story and update as and when we get more answers from Google or Oppo on the same so stay tuned for that.
