Multiple OnePlus phones unresponsive or laggy around left & right edges of the screen, no fix in sight

In recent years, OnePlus has fully entered the most premium segment of the smartphone industry. Their phones have integrated better features and higher prices every time.

While most aspects of OnePlus’ high-end phones are very competitive, they have also been dragging a problem on their screens for some time that users have complained a lot about (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).

The issue is unresponsive or laggy touch response around left and right edges of the screen on OnePlus devices. This would have started to become more noticeable since the launch of the OnePlus 8 series (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

Although the OnePlus 8 series of phones has been on the market for many months now, and more later models have arrived, the problem persists. There are related reports from just a few days ago.

The left and right edge of my screen doesn’t respond to single taps (but it responds normally when I tap anywhere else and track my finger to the screen edge ane vice versa).

It’s mainly effecting me when I tap on delete button on the keyboard. The delete button gets clicked if I press it on the center, but it doesn’t respond when I click the area of delete button close to screen edge.same is the case with other letters close to the screen edge like the letters ‘p’ and ‘q’, if I press on the center of letter p it responds but I have a habit of pressing almost the edge of the screen(for pressing the letter ‘p’) and it doesn’t respond in this case.

As an example of old reports, a OnePlus 8T user described last year the following:

I checked out the phone thoroughly and found out that oneplus 8T is having palm rejection on the sides of screen which was meant to be for edged screens. Oneplus 8T being a non edged screen doesn’t need palm rejection. So what it does it that the touch on the edges will not work unless I slide it on the part of screen which is a little deep in the screen.

It appears that the unresponsive or laggy touch response around left and right edges of the screen on many OnePlus devices is due to an aggressive palm rejection feature.

‘Palm rejection’ is designed so that on curved screens there are no accidental side touches. However, even OnePlus phones with flat screens (like the 8T and 9R) present the issue.

Fortunately, the issue would not be caused by hardware defects. Users report that, using a custom ROM, the touch response is not affected.

Also seems keyboard little input lag. Google assistant deleted. Is this software edgeblock? How to disable it??? On custom ROM there is no that problem.

But, something to note is that OnePlus has not made an official statement about it in all this time. Therefore, it is not known if they are aware of the problem, or if a fix will ever come.
