OnePlus brought smile to its customers by introducing Android 9 ‘Pie’ for OnePlus 5 & 5T via stable channel in the last week of December 2018. Matching with OnePlus 6 & 6T, they bumped the version number of OxygenOS (OOS) to 9.0.0 with the release.

OOS 9.0.0 introduced features like December security patch, new UI, new navigation gestures (5T exclusive), Gaming Mode 3.0, DND mode with adjustable settings, Google Lens integration on stock OOS camera, and all Pie related goodies.

Transitioning to a major Android version is always complicated, and that convention holds in this case as well. OnePlus quickly released another incremental update with the version number 9.0.1 for this device duo on the last day of 2018, but not all major bugs were resolved.

Users started reporting compatibility issues with Wi-Fi on various apps since then. Now the good news is, OnePlus released another hotfix update AKA OOS 9.0.2 last night – specifically to fix the issue related to Wi-Fi.

Being a hotfix, the changelogs are mostly common. 9.0.2 contains an optimised sRGB display mode and reading mode. Issues such as 4G VoLTE toggle missing & random reboots when screen casting are fixed as well, like 9.0.1. As an addon, WiFi connectivity issue with certain third party Apps should be fixed now.

9.0.2 also contains the fix related to the issue where physical/capacitive navigation buttons not working at times. It is applicable for OnePlus 5 only, as 5T deprecates the physical buttons to follow the all-screen trend.

The original OOS 9.0.1 announcement thread on OnePlus forums was revised yesterday and OnePlus staff member Manu J. announced the availability of OOS 9.0.2 as a hotfix inside the same thread. It is safe to assume that 9.0.1 will be pulled back eventually due to the showstopper bug, as a direct incremental OTA from 9.0.0 to 9.0.2 exists as well.

As always, the rollout will be incremental. OnePlus follows this staged rollout model to minimize the risk of getting some nasty bugs epidemic. We are providing the full OTA zips anyway, for users who love to bite the bullet and update manually. It can be done via Local Upgrade option in the Settings or flashing the zip manually from stock/custom recovery.

Just don’t consume all the mobile data you’ve while downloading, as each of them weights ~1.8 GB. Credit goes to the folks behind Oxygen Updater for grabbing the download links.

Readers should remember that there was a similar changelog bundled with OOS 9.0.10 update for OnePlus 6T (Global). It is a clear indication of the shared codebase, from which newer models get newer features with priority.

As a matter of fact, there was this new update of OOS 9.0.11 for global 6T which was declared as hotfix over 9.0.10. 9.0.10 was pulled back without any apparent reason, and we are now sure about the reasons behind these chain of actions.
