Oculus Quest is Meta’s all-in-one lineup of VR (Virtual Reality) products. Quest devices integrate everything you need to enjoy a VR experience right out of the box.

Oculus Quest 2 is the latest product in the family. However, the device is currently experiencing an annoying glitch that prevents its use.

According to multiple reports, Oculus Quest 2 users are facing a black screen issue after the latest v39 update (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

Oculus Quest 2 v39 update brought a black screen issue

Oculus Quest 2 v39 update arrived a couple of weeks ago with some changes and improvements, including the stable multitasking feature.

But, multiple Oculus Quest 2 users also started experiencing a black screen issue after installing the update. The glitch can appear from the moment they activate the device.

Hi. This is the second time that happens to me.

When I turned on my headset today the main menu was all black. Only I could see the controllers and hear the Oculus menu button when I pressed the button.

Yes, the issue was solved by factory reseting it, but I want to know, I’m the only one experiencing this? There is other way to solve the problem?

Oculus Quest 2 messed up after V.39 update

After updating to V.39 my oculus is messed up in a way it has never been before. Every time I wake my headset up from sleep mode it is a black screen that dose not go away. The head set it on I can see the backlight, but the screen just stays black.

Oculus team is aware, potential workaround

The Oculus team is already aware of the glitch and is working to resolve it.

Hi there! We’re sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue after updating your headset. Our team is aware of this issue, and they are currently looking into a fix. In the meantime, we recommend checking out this forum thread for the workaround https://bit.ly/37BU4u9 👍

In the meantime, keeping the ‘guardian’ option turned on from the Oculus Quest 2 developer settings works as a workaround to prevent the black screen from appearing.

After some experimentation I found that I only get the black screen after turning off the guardian from the developer settings. I do this because when watching films my headset constantly loses tracking and breaks immersion.

If I leave the guardian enabled then then at the point where I normally see the black screen, I get the guardian setup.
