New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on April 14, 2023) follows:

Nowadays, it’s difficult to envision any products or apps, such as Facebook, Instagram, or Google, being manufactured without the support of a dark mode.

Also referred to as ‘night mode’, it is an interface option available on operating systems, browsers, websites, and apps that allows a user to change the background from light to dark.

But for some reason, Snapchat does not have a dark mode for Android, and the functionality has been sought after for a long time without any success.

Will dark mode on Snapchat for Android be locked behind a paywall?

Though it’s available on the iOS version, it’s now being reported that the company plans on making it available only to paying Android subscribers.

Reports are now making the rounds on Twitter suggesting that free Android Snapchat users will not have access to dark mode (1,2,3,4,5).

Supposedly @Snapchat is experimenting with dark mode for Android users, but rumor has it that it will only be available for Snapchat+ users when iOS will have free range to it without subscribing. If that’s the case, #BoycottSnapchat

Wow this unbelievable 🙄 Paying for a Dark mode when basically is a fucking added line in the code. By the way, who the fuck use Snapchat in this days? 🤔

This is highly disheartening for users as they believe that such a basic feature shouldn’t be placed behind a paywall (1,2,3).

Furthermore, others claim that the company has already taken a long time to create dark mode for Android. Making it a premium feature by just inserting a code further adds to their annoyance.

Here’s what we think

Though some publications (1,2,3) have reported that Snapchat for Android would unveil the dark mode functionality for paying members only, we can’t ignore the fact that this information was supplied by a leaker.

So, given that it’s merely a leak that hasn’t been formally communicated by Snapchat, we should not be too quick to evaluate the whereabouts of the feature.

It’s also possible that Snapchat has locked this functionality behind Snapchat+ for testing purposes on a select number of Android users. When completed, it might be made available to everyone at a later date.

This echoes what the company’s official page says — that a Snapchat+ subscriber exclusively gets the chance to see new features ahead of the rest.

Therefore, it again points to the fact that Snapchat is testing the dark mode feature for a limited number of premium Android users. So, we can all patiently wait till the official information is out.

We’ll keep tabs on the latest developments and update this article as and when something noteworthy comes up.
