Here’s the crux of the article in video form:

Back in 2017, when Nintendo released its latest handheld console, the Switch, the gaming world held it in very high regard. However, after 6 years, gamers now label this console as ‘obsolete.’ With the latest Nintendo Switch Update 17.0.0, one may wonder how long Nintendo intends to keep the Switch going.

While the gaming industry has been advancing rapidly, Nintendo remains in the previous generation. Both Sony and Xbox have introduced their ‘next-gen’ consoles, establishing dominance in the market. In the meantime, Nintendo’s console continually receives criticism for its poor performance in running new AAA games, such as Mortal Kombat 1.

With the latest 17.0.0 Update, is Nintendo still planning to keep Switch alive for a long time?

The answer is no. Nintendo may release additional updates to satisfy the Switch’s player base for a little while longer, but they do not plan to maintain the Switch as their primary console for an extended duration. Numerous reports, leaks, and insider statements confirm that Nintendo is gearing up to launch their next-gen console very soon.

In addition to the mythical ‘Nintendo Switch 2,’ there are rumors of a more powerful iteration of the Nintendo Switch, known as the ‘Nintendo Switch Pro.’ Some sources suggest that Nintendo could release a new console within the next 1-3 years. However, whether it will be a completely new console or an upgraded Switch remains unconfirmed.

Even if Nintendo introduces their new console, experts believe they won’t immediately discontinue production and support for the Switch. Similar to what Nintendo did with the 3DS and Wii U, support for the Switch may continue even 3-5 years after the release of their next console.

According to rumors and reports, the next-gen console will represent a significant improvement in terms of graphics and performance compared to the Switch.

Although it is often referred to as ‘Nintendo Switch 2,’ the official term for the system has not been announced. There is a slim but potential possibility for this ‘Switch 2’ to be released in September 2024.

While there are no official statements on this matter, some leaks have suggested that the physical version of the system will be priced at $549 US, with a digital-only option retailing for $400 US.

What is the current status of the Switch in the market?

The Nintendo Switch remains a popular console in the market, with over 129.5 million units sold worldwide since its launch in March 2017. However, Nintendo reported a decline in sales of its flagship Switch console in its fiscal year ending in March 2024. Selling only 17.97 million units, compared to over 23 million units sold in the previous fiscal year.

The decline in sales was attributed to semiconductor shortages and other component deficits that impacted production until around the end of summer. Despite this, Nintendo forecasts selling 15 million Switch units in the next fiscal year.
