NetherRealm’s newly released reboot of their beloved fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat 1, is reportedly encountering various audio-related issues.

According to players (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), the game’s SFX and BGM are frequently cutting off. Reports suggest that audio cues for punches and other moves are being interrupted mid-fights.

Notably, audio during fatalities and fatal moves are also randomly cutting out. Players lament that these audio cuts make the moves, especially the finishers, feel unsatisfying.

Some have also noticed a significant drop in audio quality during cutscenes.

I have a really decent headset, all other games sound great. I’ve tried the different audio settings to see if it made a difference and yeah it’s just weird sounding. The rest of the game like the fights and the menu sound normal, but it’s the cutscenes that sound off. (Source)

Additionally, players report that audio synchronization is bugged, with audio triggers often occurring much later when the move hits. This issue has reportedly worsened following the latest update.

what did it fix?and is it me or did it make the loading time slower? And sound disapearing is more frequent (Source)

However, it can’t be confirmed if this is the actual cause.

Workarounds for the audio bug in MK1

As reports accumulate, some players have suggested potential workarounds for the issue.

One player suggests that the Dolby Atmos option may be at fault and recommends turning it off until a final fix is provided.

My audio was cutting out over 50% of the time during any match. So it cut out during practice/training, towers or kombat league. I wasn’t able to fix the audio issues, but I was able to improve them a lot. I have a Dolby Atmos theater setup, and my xbox was setup for that in settings on the xbox. I changed it from Dolby Atmos to like the standard surround sound and that fixed 90% of the audio issues (Source)

It’s possible that the standard sound settings are configured for a “controller speaker” for some effects. Players can check if that’s the case and change it so that all sound comes out of the TV or connected sound system.

So I noticed the hit sounds not coming out of tv. The character would hit or a sword with slash and no sound would happen I was so confused by it at first. The game is default set to use the controller speaker for some of the sounds. It didn’t work very well though. You can go into Audio setting and change it to have all sound come out of tv. (Source)

The issue has been acknowledged by WB Games. They have shared that the issue is under investigation and soon will be fixed. Till then players are advised to reboot the game when they witness this issue.

If you are encountering audio issues while playing the #MK1 Story Mode, we are aware of the situation and looking to include a permanent fix. In the meantime, rebooting your game should be a temporary solution. (Source)
