[Update: Jan. 25] Microsoft Azure down, throwing error 503? Outage is known and under investigation

We understand service outages or breakage are pretty common. But when an outage ends up concerning a massive user base, it becomes worth highlighting. Something similar is happening with Microsoft Azure as of writing this.

For past some time, a proliferation of reports saying Azure is down, not working and showcasing a message stating “http error 503. The service is unavailable” on accessing are populating the online discussion platform Twitter. Take a look at what some of the complainants have to say:

Down detector also conveys Azure is going through a rough patch in some regions.

While reports continue to snowball, the official server status page has confirmed the outage stating:

InformationIssue accessing Azure Portal – 503 Errors – Investigating

Starting at approximately 10:30 UTC we have received reports of customers experiencing 503 errors when trying to access the Azure Portal.

Current Status: Our engineering team is aware of this issue and are actively investigating. The next update will be in 60 mins or as events warrant.

We’ll share with you the relevant developments as and when we bump into any. So keep a tab of this space for the latest info on the matter.

Update 1 (May 20, 2021)

The server is encountering issue again and Azure has acknowledged the problem saying:

Issues accessing Azure Portal – India / APAC regions

starting at 09:15 UTC a subset of customers have reported issues accessing the Azure Portal from India/APAC regions. Our engineering team is aware of this and is actively investigating. The next update will be in 60 mins or as events warrant.

Update 2 (January 25, 2023)

02:23 pm (IST): According to fresh reports (1, 2, 3, 4), MS Azure is currently down or not working for a section of users.

And this isn’t the only Microsoft service currently facing outage. As a matter of fact, other services including Outlook, MS Office 365, Teams, and OneDrive are also down for many.

Luckily, Azure support has acknowledged the current outage and said that they are working to resolve it.

06:45 pm (IST): Microsoft’s service status page shows that there are currently no ongoing issues with MS Azure. This indicates that the recent outage with the service has been resolved.
