At Mobile World Congress 2024, MediaTek made a significant announcement that has caught the attention of the tech world. In collaboration with Google, MediaTek revealed that its Dimensity 9300 and 8300 chipsets are now optimized for Google’s groundbreaking Gemini Nano LLM for on-device AI functions. This marks a significant step forward in mobile AI, extending the innovative AI features pioneered by the Google Pixel 8 Pro to a wider range of Android devices.

Gemini Nano, Google’s mobile-centric large language model (LLM), has already transformed the Pixel 8 Pro experience into arguably the best on the planet. In fact, the Pixel 8 series was just named the best smartphone of 2023 at the MWC 2024 event thanks to the many AI features Google baked into the phone courtesy of Gemini Nano. This LLM powers remarkable on-device generative AI features like the Pixel Recorder’s ability to summarize conversations and Gboard’s insightful smart replies.

The integration of Gemini Nano into MediaTek Dimensity 9300 and 8300 chipsets is a testament to the growing importance of on-device AI capabilities in smartphones. By leveraging MediaTek’s NeuroPilot toolkit and porting Gemini Nano to MediaTek APU, both companies have worked tirelessly to ensure optimal performance and efficiency on these premium chipsets. The advantages of on-device generative AI are clear. Users benefit from improved privacy, heightened security, lower latency, and the ability to use AI features even in areas with limited or without internet connectivity.

One cannot overlook the pioneering role played by the Google Pixel 8 Pro in driving the adoption of on-device generative AI. With MediaTek now onboard, the technology is set to proliferate further, allowing developers and OEMs to harness the capabilities of Gemini Nano in creating innovative applications and AI features for a broader audience. To this end, MediaTek and Google have plans to unveil an APK running on Dimensity 9300 and 8300 chipsets to facilitate developers and OEMs in deploying Gemini Nano applications seamlessly.

This announcement cements Google’s role as the driving force in mobile AI, especially coming on the back of a similar collaboration with Samsung for on-device AI features on the Galaxy S24 series. Their initial success with the Pixel 8 Pro is now paving the way for a more AI-infused Android ecosystem, promising a new era of intelligent smartphone experiences.
