Export as PDF is a feature on macOS that allows users to export a document in a PDF format. However, some macOS Monterey users are now reporting that this feature is not working.

Users say that the Export to PDF option in Preview section is greyed out and they can’t access it. As a result, those affected then took to Reddit and the Apple community forum to raise a complaint about the same.

Here are some reports for reference:

Hello! I installed Monterey 12.0.1 on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) but I have problem with “Preview”. When I open a PDF files and add personal text (for example), I can’t click on “Export to PDF” because the menu item is disable. Until a few days ago, I was doing the same things with BigSur and this feature was enabled. Can you fix? (Source)

I am having similar problems with Word, NeoOffice and Foxit Reader: cannot export to PDF using any of these software after system upgrade. Is it just me? Could it be a bigger problem with Monterey? (Source)

As per reports, this option was available until they were running macOS Big Sur. But after they upgraded to the latest macOS Monterey, the option got disabled.

Also, this issue has been mainly reported by users on macOS Monterey 12.0.1, so it seems that the problem was not present on macOS 12 and it occurred after Apple seeded the macOS 12.0.1 update.

Workaround to Export as PDF greyed out on macOS Monterey issue

On the brighter side, some of the affected users managed to find a workaround for this issue. And you can also try this no-brainer workaround and see if it works.

WORKAROUND: right click the pdf > open in safari > file print > save as PDF (Source)

If this above-mentioned workaround does not help you to get rid of the problem then there’s nothing else you can do besides wait for Apple to fix it.

This problem seems annoying since users are not able to export their documents as PDF and it is a kind of function which was easily usable in the previous macOS version.

Unfortunately, Apple has not yet acknowledged the issue with Export as PDF not working on macOS Monterey and we hope that it gets sorted out soon, possibly in the upcoming macOS updates.

Rest assured, we will keep you updated on the latest development of this issue as and when anything new comes to our notice.
