Instagram allows users to create fun videos to share with their friends or family in the form of Reels. These help one entertain their audience with creative content, showcase their personality, and get popular on the platform as well.

Instagram downgrading Reels quality

However, by looking at the reports (1,2,3,4,5), it appears that the quality of user-created reels is being downgraded by Instagram.

Users say that the quality in which they had first uploaded the Reels does not remain the same. And all those clips which have been posted for a few weeks or at least 30 days are being allegedly downgraded in quality.

Some even claim to have done a side-by-side comparison of the originally uploaded video with the one that they have recently downloaded.

They have mentioned that the video quality is being reduced to 720p. Owing to this, older Reels appear more blurry than they originally were.

And understandably, this is quite worrying for those who make use of the feature to showcase their portfolio as their artwork’s quality is getting affected as well.

This is also disappointing for users who have shot videos for their official channels or work profile.

Why my older reels didn’t look as 4k as compared to when I uploaded them for the first time? Like when i replay them they look blurry what the heck instagram? Thats so annoying

Without telling anyone and thinking creators wouldn’t notice, @instagram now compresses any reels older than 30 days into blurry garbage.

Some are even of the view that the platform is compressing videos in order to save on storage space. Doing so also allows Instagram to reduce its large amounts of storage server costs.

As of now, there is no official response from Instagram, so it cannot be confirmed whether it’s an expected behavior or a bug.

Also, it’s quite possible that users might have never even examined their older reels and witnessed the difference in quality.

So, we would like to request that you check your old Instagram reels and see if this is happening with you as well or not. Kindly let us know your thoughts in the comments and also vote below.
