Apple released iPadOS 16.3.1 update last month which introduced some bug fixes to known issues and security updates.

For instance, it fixed a bug that made iCloud settings unresponsive or display incorrectly if apps were using iCloud. The patch also addresses the glitch where Siri requests for Find My may not work.

However, some are facing issues after installing iPadOS 16.3.1 update on their iPads.

iPadOS 16.3.1 update seems to have broken external display or Sidecar support

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), some users are facing issues when using the external display or sidecar feature.

It is alleged that the iPad is unable to properly detect the secondary or external monitor and display content on it even when it appears in the display settings.

An M1 iPad owner says that after installing the recent update, their external monitor no longer works with their device. They claim to have tried resetting the iPad as well but with no success.

Another user adds that even though they can connect a secondary screen with an iPad running an older OS, the same cannot be done on iPad with the latest v16.3.1 update.

Users have tried swapping the USB-C hubs and HDMI cables, rebooting and resetting their iPad devices, but to no avail.

Some iPad users (1,2,3,4,5) claim that they can successfully mirror their device’s screen on to an external display. But unfortunately, even they are unable to use their external display like an extended one.

Due to this bug, multi-tasking capabilities and work-related activities of iPad owners are being affected.

It is worth mentioning that a user claims that you may be able to use external monitors as an extended display via the Stage Manager Feature soon. Notably, your iPad must have the M1 or M2 chip embedded in it.

Also, it’s important to highlight, that this is not the first time such an issue has occurred.

Those affected are now requesting the developers to fix this persistent glitch.

No official response

Unfortunately, Apple has not officially acknowledged the issues yet. But we do hope that Apple fixes these issues soon so that iPad owners can use this feature as intended.

That said, we will keep an eye on the bug where iPadOS 16.3.1 update seems to have broken the external display or Sidecar support and update this story as new information becomes available.
