Original story (published on June 14, 2023) follows:

Dark mode has become increasingly popular among users, as it provides a sleek and visually appealing interface while reducing eye strain, especially in low-light environments.

Instagram introduced the dark mode feature in 2019, allowing users to toggle between the light and dark themes based on their preference.

Instagram keeps switching ‘Dark’ to ‘Light’ mode

However, users say that due to a recent glitch, Instagram keeps switching ‘Dark’ to ‘Light’ mode (1,2,3,4,5,6).

Imagine scrolling through your Instagram feed, where the photos and videos are displayed against a dark background, only to suddenly encounter a blindingly bright screen as you reopen the app.

The frustration among affected users has been further exacerbated by the fact that the dark mode feature had been working flawlessly for them before the sudden switch to light mode.

Users emphasize that they had not made any recent updates to the app or made changes to their settings that could have triggered the issue.

This sudden shift in the app’s appearance not only interrupts the user’s flow but also strains their eyes, especially when in low-light environment.

Instagram keeps switching to light mode recently, I’ve had it in dark mode since dark mode was an option. Wondering why Instagram keeps switching to light mode even though I haven’t touched any of my settings and I’ve been in dark mode for the longest time

what a horror Instagram in light mode out of nowhere, I went through all the settings to force the decent normal beautiful mode and the app is not appearing in the list of individually applying dark mode in MIUI, what a bag

In some cases, it shows a wired mix of light and dark modes where some things appear white while the rest is dark or vice versa (1,2,3,4):

The disorienting mix of light and dark modes not only impacts the aesthetics but also affects the functionality of the app.

In some instances, users have reported that certain buttons or icons within the app become difficult to see or interact with due to the conflicting color schemes.

Potential workaround

In the meantime, users can take solace in the fact that the workaround of closing and reopening the Instagram app seems to provide temporary fix.

Had it happen to me. I completely closed IG and then opened it fresh and it was back to dark mode.

We hope that Instagram will respond quickly to user complaints and restore the seamless and delightful dark mode experience that has become an essential feature.
