[Updated] Instagram app crashing when opening DMs (chats) for some users (potential workarounds inside)

Without a doubt, Instagram is an immersive social media platform that lets content creators and individuals capture and share moments with the world.

The platform also makes it easy for users to connect with their peers and audience via Direct Messages (DMs) and calls. However, recently, some have been experiencing difficulties connecting with others.

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple Instagram users are experiencing crashing issues when opening chats or DMs. They assert that such crashes occur only when messages from certain users are opened.

On the other hand, some claim that the app closes automatically whenever they are trying to view disappearing photos that they have sent or received.

This is undeniably frustrating for all those who are unable to access their conversations with different users and reply back to any urgent messages.

Due to this glitch, some even have to login to Instagram’s web portal to be able to reply back to their followers.

And to make matters worse, those affected also have to delete their conversations with others to be able to access the app without any issues.

The issue has been persistent for the past few days and mostly affects Android users.

Certain dms keep crashing the app randomly and refuse to work and the only way I can access them is when I delete the whole conversation, anyone got a fix for this?

Sadly, clearing the app cache and data, restarting or uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and switching to different accounts could not help solve the problem.

Fortunately, we did come across some potential workarounds that might help solve your problem. If you are on the beta channel, then you can try installing the stable version of the app.

However, to do so, you need to first uninstall the beta version before you can switch to the stable release.

It is also recommended that you login to the problematic accounts before you embark on adding other accounts to the app.

Alternatively, you can download and install the Instagram Lite app on your smartphone until this problem is resolved by the developers.

We are hopeful that Instagram will address this problem shortly. Having said that, we will keep an eye on this issue and update this article as and when we come across the latest developments.

04:43 pm (IST): Fresh reports (1, 2, 3) indicated that Instagram app is again crashing for some users, especially when viewing stories or watching reels.
