New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on April 20, 2023) follows:

Imgur is one of the most popular image-hosting websites in the world. It is widely used to quickly upload and share images, GIFs, memes, and more with thousands, if not millions, worldwide.

The platform is also commonly used to share sexual or pornographic content on websites like Reddit and Twitter. A significant chunk of Reddit’s NSFW content lies on the shoulders of Imgur at the moment.

However, a recent change in the platform’s policy has disappointed the community.

Imgur banning NSFW content

The company is set to update its Terms of Service on May 15, 2023. Following Tumblr’s footsteps, Imgur plans on banning all NSFW content from the website. Here’s a snippet of the new terms:

If you’ve ever dived into the rabbit hole of NSFW content on Reddit, you already know that half of the content, if not more, uses Imgur as its hosting platform. Naturally, this decision leaves many upset.

The ban also deletes all of the previously posted NSFW content. This means that every NSFW post on Reddit that uses an Imgur link becomes obsolete after May 15, 2023.

If you have uploaded a lot of sexual content on the website, we recommend backing it up on local storage.

Users have taken to social media platforms like Twitter to express their concerns regarding the new changes. Some are even questioning the future of the website.

According to a user, Imgur and Reddit have a lot of mutual investors who might be making these changes to limit NSFW content on Reddit. According to some, Reddit has been attempting to eliminate NSFW content for a while.

Some alternatives

Though it’s incredibly hard to replace a giant like Imgur, there are certain platforms that offer similar functionality. Here are some of the most popular Imgur alternatives:

  • RedGifs: If Imgur is Apple, RedGifs is Samsung. We believe that it can be a potential successor to Imgur after the NSFW ban. Supports JPEG, PNG, and GIFs.
  • imgbox: A simple free-to-use image hosting service with unlimited storage.
  • imagebam: Yet another fast and free alternative to Imgur.

While it’s unlikely that Imgur will revert these changes, it’ll be interesting to note how things unfold. We’ll keep an eye on this matter and update this story to reflect noteworthy information.
