New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Huawei is on a update spree at this moment, as the Chinese OEM is relentlessly pushing EMUI 9.1 (Magic UI 2.1 for Honor devices) to older phones. As a matter of fact, they have started to roll out August security patches for P20 Pro, even before Google!

When it comes to legacy devices, Huawei is pretty much generous to provide major version updates. A bunch of their Kirin 960 powered phones recently got the Pie based EMUI 9.1 via beta channel. The SoC itself was announced in 2016.

Some of those phones were launched with Android Nougat on board, while newer ones came with Oreo. Although most of them got Pie via EMUI 9.0, features like EROFS and GPU Turbo 3.0 did not exist in the early Pie based builds.

Among these devices, Huawei Mate 9 got the stable EMUI 9.1 update during the last week of July. Honor 9 is also being blessed with the same update that brings usual EMUI goodies to the former budget flagship.

As a matter of fact, the long-anticipated OTA is reportedly available on Huawei P10 Plus (codename: VKY) units as well. Available as both single and dual SIM variants, P10 Plus came with a 5.5 inches traditional (aka notchless) LCD screen and dual (20+12 MP) rear camera setup.

Now there is a catch! The screenshot shared by Huawei Central is showing that the global dual SIM Huawei P10 Plus (VKY-L29) is getting the OTA with the version number 9.1.0.252. Apart from the July security patches, EROFS and GPU Turbo 3.0 are also present in this build.

However, we can locate a new build on Huawei update servers. Similar to the incident of P20 Pro, P10 Plus is now ready to get August security patches in the form of EMUI 9.1.0.255 – a slight increment over the existing .252 build.

As we don’t have the device hand, we are unable to test this new build. Judging from the previous incidents, the OEM may going to distribute the regular 9.1.0.252 build over HiCare app. Afterwards the users will be notified to download the 9.1.0.255 as an incremental OTA.

Due to the similarities between Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, the former should also get the same treatment. Thanks to the Firmware Finder by Team MT, we are able to spot 9.1.0.255 build for regular P10 (codename: VTR) with August security patches as well.
