Ring is a popular home security and smart home company owned by the tech giant Amazon. Founded in 2013, it manufactures several home security products such as surveillance cameras.

As of Q1 2022, the total revenue of Ring increased to somewhere around $468 million with subscription revenue amounting to $440 million.

That said, Ring announced a couple of new features for the Ring Protect Basic plans a few days ago.

However, it comes with a substantial increase in subscription costs, with those looking to use multiple devices reportedly upset over the sudden announcement.

While some said they would continue using basic functionalities offered by the service such as doorbell alerts, live camera view, and two-way talk, others are looking for Ring alternatives that make sense and offer similar features at competitive prices.

The new price raise was designed to punish basic subscribers with 3 or less devices. Change my mind. The price increase is an obvious cash grab to punish subscribers with 3 or less devices on the basic plan. Before, it was far more economical to put two of my devices on the basic plan and leave one of them subscription free since I didn’t use it that often.

Now I may as well subscribe to the plus plan to protect all three because its only 5 dollars more at $100. No new features worth mentioning and then having the gall to not admit this was their grand plan has convinced me to go subscription free until the actual worthwhile features they promise are instated.

A bunch of users said they are thinking of switching to non-subscription services and devices with onboard storage such as the Eufy video doorbell and the Wyze indoor camera.

Others are opting for local alarm companies in their area. Google’s Nest subscription also seems to be a good option since the pricing is now in line with Ring.

Some say they are considering switching to solutions such as Amcrest, Reolink IP cameras, and Ubiquiti. If you are a DIY enthusiast, SimpliSafe is another fantastic alternative to look out for.

Let us hope Ring takes a look at user feedback and adjusts its prices accordingly in the coming days since the sudden increase in subscription price will eventually lead to many users switching to another service.
