Since its release last year (2021), some Halo Infinite online players have been facing multiple netcode and matchmaking issues that negatively impact gameplay.

343 Industries is currently working on resolving some of the most critical issues in the game. For instance, Halo Infinite recently received a patch to resolve the desync issue and improve overall matchmaking.

However, there are still some notable problems that have been present for months. One of the most recurring complaints of Halo Infinite players is the unreliable melee hit registration system (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).

Although the issue in question has been affecting players for a long time, the long-awaited fix is now very close according to 343 Industries.

Halo Infinite melee hit registration still unreliable months later

A common situation in Halo Infinite online matches is ‘ghost hits’ with melee hit weapons. This means that the screen shows that you hit the enemy, but they do not take any damage (1, 2, 3, 4).

The melee makes no sense at all

It either lunges you from a mile away or simply doesn’t hit at all when point blank. And if you both melee each other, one of you gets launched in the air while the other is stuck on the ground having absolutely no clue where you just went. This melee seriously needs to be fixed since it’s so integral to the combat of this game.

I don’t understand melee in Halo Infinite

The melee attack seems so simple at glance, but in actual gameplay it is inconsistent. I can sometimes shoot a guy with my gun, approach him, smack him with melee and he still lives while he just smacks me once and I drop like a loot piñata for him.

You can see the effects of the problem more clearly in the following video:

As mentioned at the beginning, this situation has been present since the release of the game. So, many players are concerned that the melee hit registration problems persist until now (1, 2, 3).

The issue will finally get a fix soon

The Halo Infinite developers will finally prioritize fixing the unreliable melee hit registration system.

The company confirms through its support forums that they are working on adjustments to both the game’s collision engine and the netcode determinism system.

We are working on improvements to our player collision systems, especially during melee. Given how important melee is to our combat dance, this is also a very high priority work item for my team. We will share more in patch notes as we resolve issues.
