Original story (published on January 08, 2022) follows:

Halo Infinite is the latest installment in the iconic FPS series. Since its launch in August, players have been discovering some issues that need to be resolved in order to achieve the best experience.

According to recent reports, Halo Infinite players on PC are facing a memory leak issue. This causes the game to crash or underperform, and is frustrating many players (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Halo Infinite suffers from a memory leak issue

Multiple reports from Halo Infinite players agree that the game suffers from a memory leak issue on PC. In some cases, this causes the frame rate to behave erratically, affecting gameplay.

Is anyone else having a potential memory leak issue with Halo Infinite ever since the campaign dropped? I start the game running about 75fps consistently with no frame drops. Then it makes its way down to the 50s, then 40s, then 30s, and sits somewhere around 25-35fps over about 5 mins no matter what graphics settings I’m running at. It is very noticeable when you first enter the open world, and the problem is not just the campaign either.

Meanwhile, in other reported cases, Halo Infinite directly crashes due to its high use of hardware resources. The crashing issue occurs after a while of playing.

The number of bytes HaloInfinite.exe is consuming is 14GB of virtual memory. This is NOT normal and causes a memory leak crash which is why HaloInfinite.exe will quit to desktop without any error message. The reason you’re crashing to desktop is this resource exhaustion – you’re simply running out of available memory which will eventually crash the application.

Some workarounds to mitigate performance issues

As a potential workaround to mitigate the issue, it is recommended to modify the RAM clock speeds, either raising or lowering them, according to the particular case of each player.

The fix: remove any overclocking on your RAM, and if that does not work, underclock your RAM to somewhere in the mid 2000s. I suggested this fix to a few people and they have stated it worked. So, I hope this helps anyone else who sees this. I have a feeling this is why this has disproportionately affected higher-end PCs.

Similarly, periodically restarting the game reportedly helps mitigate the game performance issues.

Issue allegedly logged with developers

One user reports that, after contacting the Halo Waypoint support team, the response was that the issue was logged with developers. But, there is still no public statement from the company in this regard.
