Google has set an ambitious goal to ship over 10 million Pixel smartphones in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the company. This target follows their achievement of shipping around 10 million units in 2023 amidst a global economic slowdown.
To achieve this ambitious target, Nikkei Asia reports that Google will be diversifying its supply chain beyond China and tapping into the booming Indian market. They have instructed suppliers to begin manufacturing Pixel smartphones in India as early as the next quarter. This move marks a crucial shift in their strategy, which previously relied heavily on Chinese production.
Production will initially focus on the high-end Pixel 8 Pro in southern India, starting in the April-June quarter. The Pixel 8 will follow later in the year, manufactured in the north of the country. Google’s entry into the Indian manufacturing scene follows similar moves by Apple, Samsung, Oppo, and Xiaomi, who have established assembly and component supplier hubs in the country.
Beyond production expansion, Google also recognizes the importance of a thriving Pixel business for its broader ecosystem. A successful Pixel line supports its search engine and mobile operating system, especially in the face of competition from Huawei’s HarmonyOS and Samsung’s potential switch to a different default search engine.
Google’s Pixel journey reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are diversifying their production bases and seeking new market opportunities. With its ambitious goals and strategic moves, Google seems well-positioned to continue its Pixel success story in 2024 and beyond.
