Google is undoubtedly the most visited website on the internet. Handling more than 3.5 million search requests every day, the search engine accounts for more than 92% of the global market.

The tech giant uses a priority rank system known as ‘PageRank’ that helps it optimize search results. Its main purpose is to search for text in documents available on public servers.

Having said that, the search giant often makes changes to its algorithm and experiments with UI changes every once in a while. Recently, Google made some changes to the Search page results (1,2,3) and updated its dark mode.

Formerly, Google search used to have a dark grey background with blue text, but the update changes it to a black background with white text. Many say they are unable to read anything due to the high contrast and glow.

You can see in the image below what the updated Google Search dark mode with a black background and white text looks like.

Google dark mode background now completely back
My google ‘all’ search page’s background is completely black. How do I switch it back so dark mode has a dark gray background? If I go to ‘News’ and the other pages, it has the background gray color I’m used to.

Anyone else struggling with the new Google dark mode?
The new google dark mode is slowly rolling out, and it’s unusable for me. There is too much contrast between the white text on the black and it’s leading to words blurring into one and the glow and movement around it makes it impossible for me to use.

As it turns out, there is a workaround that might help revert the changes introduced with the updated Google Search dark mode. A diamond product expert suggests clearing cache and cookies a few times to opt-out of the experiment.

If you see a different layout on Google Search pages when signed in to your Google account, but the page looks normal when signed out or in an Incognito window, you may be seeing a Google Live Experiment. Google constantly targets random users with experimental variations to the Search and Image Search interfaces. Sometimes the differences are barely noticeable. Other variations are much more noticeable. If you’re seeing one of these experiments, you could try clearing cache and cookies but, if that doesn’t help, there’s nothing you can do but wait until Google terminates the experiment. Most experiments seem to run only for a week or two.
