Update 1 (December 13, 2023)

05:27 pm (IST): Through a Product Expert, Google confirmed that the ‘hum to search a song’ button not appearing is an expected behavior when the person is not logged in or is using Incognito mode. However, there are some affected even if they are logged into their accounts.

Original story follows:

The innovative yet sometimes inaccurate ‘hum to search a song’ feature by Google is reportedly missing on iOS.

To help their users identify a song stuck in their heads, Google added the feature to their search bar. But reports claim the option has recently been missing on Apple devices.

Can not get the song search option in the Google search widget to work. Cleared cache, reinstalled and restarted and still immediately comes up with “unable to find a match”. (Source)

I’ve definitely been using Song Finder through the Google app on my iOS products (iPhone & iPad) just last year. However, one day the Google app update was in progress, and now Google Hum to Search is not visible at all. Normally when I press the mic button the “Search a Song” item should appear but now it doesn’t appear anymore. (Source)

As the reports above point out, the feature is not only unavailable on the Google App but also on the search bar widget on iOS.

So far, users have reported that the issue is visible on the latest version of the OS (iOS 17) as well as the older ones (16.5 and 16.6).

Frustrated by the issue, many users flocked to the official Google Support forum to share their experiences (1, 2, 3, 4) and demand a fix.

After the wave of grievances by the users, Google allegedly has been made aware of the situation.

On the forum, a ‘Diamond Product Expert’ responded to one of the complaints by quoting Google’s response:

The Google Team has updated the information on the bug shared by one of the users today, on the primary thread. Please let the users know that you have notified the product team & they are looking into it. (Source)

Besides this, there hasn’t been any other official statement from Google regarding the issue.

We’ll keep track of the situation and post an update if and when there are any further developments on the matter.
