Although 5G support is commonly taken for granted in any mobile flagship, there are some models that, for one reason or another, do not have the option enabled in certain territories. An example of this is the Google Pixel devices and their lack of support for 5G networks in Slovakia.
However, it seems that the situation is changing, as some models are finally receiving support for next-generation networks for better mobile connectivity.
5G support reaching Google Pixel 7 and 8 series in Slovakia
The reason why the Google Pixel series was not compatible with 5G networks in Slovakia, although its modem includes compatible bands, is that these devices are not officially sold in the country.
While many manufacturers don’t implement this type of band restriction by region on their unlocked phones, it seems that Google has been doing so in some countries. That said, this month reports began to emerge from Google Pixel users stating that they could use 5G networks on carriers like Orange.
Also, reports of functional 5G connectivity come from users of the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series, while older devices (such as the Pixel 6 series) do not seem to be enjoying the same treatment. This is causing frustration among people who claim that the Pixel 6 series modem also has all the 5G bands necessary to function properly in the country.
In the report above, user Timotej from Pixel support forums states that, while official 5G connectivity does not work in Slovakia on the Pixel 6 series, it can be enabled through root access. Therefore, the only thing that is preventing users of those devices from enjoying 5G networks in that country is an intentional block by Google.
Official confirmation from carriers
Following reports of functional 5G connectivity on Pixel devices from users in Slovakia, some carriers officially confirmed the good news. Among these carriers are O2 and Telekom, which claim that they managed to implement support in direct collaboration with an American company. They also confirmed that 5G support is only available in the Pixel 7 and 8 series, leaving out the Pixel 6 series.
Finally, the report suggests that this move would be a prelude to the possible expansion of the availability of Google Pixel devices in more markets, which would include Slovakia, although there is still no official confirmation about it.
