Google is making changes to its Pixel Launcher in compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The most notable adjustment allows Pixel users in the EU to switch their default search engine within the launcher, giving them options beyond Google Search.

Previously, the search bar at the bottom of the Pixel homescreen was permanently tied to Google. This new update offers an alternative, albeit with a restricted set of search providers. Currently, reports indicate that users may choose between DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Google as their default option.

This change was highlighted by Mishaal Rahman who received a tip from an individual who noticed the newly added option. Users who have received the update will be prompted with a notification to change their default search provider. The setting can also be accessed within the Pixel Launcher settings menu. I’ve added the screenshots below for reference:

The Digital Markets Act is reshaping how tech giants operate within the European Union. Google is introducing other changes across Android, Search, Chrome, and related products to ensure compliance. This includes additional choice screens for default browsers and search engines during the initial Android setup.

While it’s a start, you still can’t pick a search engine that Google doesn’t list in the Pixel Launcher. So if your favorite search engine is missing, you’ll just have to make do with the provided options. However, this update signifies a shift in user control, allowing EU-based Pixel users to tailor their search experience directly within the launcher. As someone who lives outside the EU, I hope Google brings the option to choose a search engine globally, rather than wait for the law to force them to do so.
