Pixel phone owners who yearn for greater control over their home screen layout could soon be in luck. Google is considering expanding the grid size choices in the Pixel Launcher with the addition of 5×6 and 6×6 app grid layouts, potentially giving users more ways to personalize their devices.

The Pixel Launcher currently offers a range of app grid sizes. Users can choose from symmetrical layouts ranging from a compact 2×2 grid to a more spacious 5×5 grid. Additionally, Android 12 introduced a 4×5 asymmetrical option, providing a rectangular layout well-suited for taller displays. But even with the asymmetrical choice, Pixel enthusiasts, particularly those who own larger phones like the Pixel 8 Pro, have been vocal in requesting additional grid size options. They desire finer control over how their apps and widgets are arranged.

Several feature requests filed on the Google Issue Tracker proposed the addition of both 6×5 and 6×6 grid sizes. The detailed feature request caught the eye of a Google developer, who forwarded the suggestion to the development team last month for consideration.

We have passed the “Enhanced App Grid Customization feature” on to the product team for consideration as future work.

This positive development suggests that Google might be exploring ways to make the Pixel Launcher experience even more customizable with the addition of the much-requested 5×6 app grid size and perhaps even a 6×6 layout.

While exciting, it’s important for Pixel fans to temper their expectations. This is not an official confirmation that these larger grid layouts will be implemented in the near future. However, the fact that Google is actively considering the request is an encouraging sign. It hints at a future where Pixel users enjoy even more control over how their home screens look and function.

We’ll have to wait and see if Google includes the new app grid layouts in the Pixel Launcher’s Android 15 update.

Thanks for the tip: hehemuse!
