Pixel users passionate about smooth gameplay have faced an ongoing issue since the March update where the Game Dashboard FPS counter, once a reliable tool for monitoring gaming performance, now stubbornly displays two dashes instead of the actual FPS count. While seemingly a minor annoyance, this bug presents a significant hurdle for competitive gamers and those who enjoy tweaking settings for the best possible play experience.

The issue has persisted through the recent April update, leaving players frustrated and wondering if Google is even aware of the problem. Below is a video of the glitch uploaded on our Imgur account:

While a fix may not arrive with the upcoming May release, there’s promising news. Our tests show that the Game Dashboard FPS counter functions correctly on Pixel devices running Android 14 QPR3 beta and Android 15 beta. This bodes well for a future solution, even if it doesn’t come immediately. Below is a screenshot from a Pixel 8 running the latest Android 14 QPR3 beta. As you can see, the FPS counter is working fine.

Since the problem seems tied to the stable Android build, relief is likely on the way. While hope remains for a fix in May, Pixel gamers can feel more confident that the Game Dashboard FPS counter will function correctly with the June Pixel Feature Drop update or, at the latest, upon the release of stable Android 15.

Until then, those after an accurate FPS reading have a few workarounds. Some might opt for third-party solutions, while others could cautiously try the Android beta program, be it Android 14 or 15, knowing that beta builds may contain additional bugs. We have handy guides on how to install Android 14 beta and Android 15 beta.

A functioning FPS counter isn’t just about bragging rights. It provides crucial feedback to those who want to optimize their gaming experience. Whether troubleshooting lag issues or comparing the impact of different graphics settings, FPS serves as a valuable metric, and its absence within the Game Dashboard is a considerable inconvenience for Pixel users.
