Google Pixel Fold users could get an improved camera experience thanks to an alleged in-development ‘Dual Screen’ mode for taking photos, allowing you to use one of the screens to see a preview of the image.

A new ‘Dual Screen’ camera mode would arrive on the Google Pixel Fold

To better take advantage of the Pixel Fold particular format possibilities, Google would be working on a new camera feature that would offer a preview of the photo you want to take on one of its screens while you take the photo with the other screen.

Part of the charm of foldable smartphones is using their format to enhance the functionality of the apps, so it is curious that the Pixel Fold does not yet offer the option of using both screens at the same time to take photos. Similar devices from other brands, such as the Galaxy Z Folds/Flip series, have already offered this type of features for a long time.

However, this could be explained by Google’s ‘inexperience’ with this type of product, since the Pixel Fold is the first device of its kind that the company launches, while Samsung (and others) already have some years of experience and development behind them.

Returning to the alleged ‘Dual Screen’ mode of the Pixel Fold, the future camera feature was discovered by the Android Authority team. More specifically, they found direct references in lines of code of the latest Pixel Camera v9.2 after doing an APK teardown:

According to the report, the mode will not work when using the Battery Saver option or when the device detects high temperatures. This is not strange on Pixel devices, since they tend to limit multiple camera options when the device is ‘very hot’, and is even often seen on devices from other brands such as Sony.

Finally, the feature is not yet functionally implemented, so you will probably have to wait at least a few weeks (or months) for the final rollout.
