A purported image of the Google Pixel Fold 2 prototype has surfaced, hinting at a significant design revamp compared to its predecessor. The leak, seemingly coming from the same source that revealed the potential switch to the Tensor G4 chip, paints a picture of a foldable phone with distinct changes.
The most striking difference lies in the camera bump. The signature Pixel camera bar design will likely be replaced by a new shape unlike anything seen on previous Pixel devices. This suggests a potential departure from the unified camera design language Google has been using since the Pixel 6 series. Another major change is the cover screen, which appears visibly longer and narrower than the original Fold’s wide display perhaps in a bid to address a common complaint about app compatibility in landscape mode. This shift could signify a move towards a more traditional phone aspect ratio when unfolded.
While the image doesn’t reveal the design of the inner screen, the source claims the Pixel Fold 2 will feature a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera instead of the bezel notch in the first Fold. Additionally, the device is described as “fairly thin” despite a noticeable display crease. As always, leaks should be treated with caution. The Pixel Fold 2’s launch is likely months away, which should give Google ample time to make changes if needed. However, this early glimpse suggests Google might be taking a bold design direction for its next foldable phone.
We’ve already heard that the Pixel Fold 2 could forego the Tensor G3 chipset featured in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in favor of the Tensor G4 expected to debut alongside the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro in October. This development implies a delay in the Pixel Fold 2 release date, probably beyond last year’s Pixel Fold launch in May.
