According to the latest data provided by SellCell, a phone trade-in site, the resale value of the Google Pixel 8 has taken a significant hit. The figures, based on a comparison with the newly released iPhone 15, reveal a stark contrast in value retention between the two flagship devices.
Pixel 8’s value taking a nose dive
The iPhone 15 series, launched in September 2023, has managed to retain its value significantly better than its Android counterpart, the Google Pixel 8 series. This is despite the fact that the Pixel 8 duo launched a month later.
SellCell’s analysis suggests that, on average, the iPhone 15 has experienced a depreciation of 28.8% across the range, with the best-performing model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max 256GB, losing only 18.8% of its value. In contrast, the Google Pixel 8 series has suffered a staggering 63.7% average depreciation in the mere ten days following its launch, translating to a loss of $650.67 in cash terms.
The disparity in value retention is highlighted further when considering the historical performance of previous iPhone models. While the iPhone 15 has outperformed its immediate predecessor, the iPhone 14, it falls short of matching the remarkable value retention achieved by the iPhone 13, which lost a mere 18.7% of its value in the first month following its 2021 launch.
The news of the Pixel 8’s lackluster resale value comes as a blow to Google, especially as it strives to compete in the highly competitive smartphone market. On the other hand, Apple’s dominance in maintaining strong resale value continues to solidify, with the iPhone 15 series showcasing its resilience even amidst the usual depreciation trend associated with new smartphone releases.
With the data clearly indicating the superior value retention of the iPhone 15 compared to the Google Pixel 8, it appears that Apple’s stronghold in the market remains unchallenged. That being said, SellCell’s data doesn’t represent the entire market. You may find a better deal on your used Pixel 8 on other websites or by selling it on something like Facebook Marketplace. So explore all available options to find the best value for your device.
