While Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series dominated the burgeoning GenAI-capable smartphone market in Q1 2024, Google’s Pixel 8 Pro secured a notable 10th position, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest report. This achievement solidifies Google’s leadership in the GenAI space and demonstrates the Pixel 8 Pro’s role as a flagship device showcasing Google’s AI prowess.
The report reveals that GenAI-capable smartphones now constitute 6% of global smartphone sales, a substantial increase from the previous quarter. Samsung, with its aggressive marketing and established presence, captured 58% of this growing segment, thanks to popular features like chat/note assist and live translate.
Chinese brands also made a strong showing, securing six spots in the top 10. Xiaomi, vivo, HONOR, and OPPO have been aggressively integrating GenAI features across their product lines, focusing initially on their home market, which now accounts for one-third of the global GenAI smartphone market. However, Google’s Pixel 8 Pro, while holding a modest 2.2% market share, showcases the company’s commitment to AI innovation. Despite being a relatively new player in the smartphone hardware market and having a smaller distribution network, the Pixel 8 Pro’s inclusion in the top 10 highlights its appeal to tech-savvy consumers seeking cutting-edge AI capabilities. This is particularly impressive considering that Google is the undisputed leader in GenAI with its Gemini model, and the Pixel 8 Pro serves as a testament to Google’s expertise in this field.
Furthermore, most brands currently offer only one or two GenAI-capable devices, and Apple has yet to enter the market, giving Google a unique opportunity to shine. The Pixel 8 Pro’s success in this context underscores its position as a trailblazer in the GenAI smartphone space.
Counterpoint Research predicts that GenAI-capable smartphones will account for 11% of the overall smartphone market by the end of 2024, driven by new use cases, increased consumer awareness, and the availability of more affordable GenAI chipsets. With Apple expected to enter the market later this year, the competition is set to intensify.
Google’s Pixel 8 Pro’s position in the top 10, despite the brand’s limitations, suggests a promising future for Google in the GenAI smartphone space.
