Google is pushing the boundaries of on-device AI with advancements to its Gemini Nano language model. Soon, your Pixel 8 Pro may be able to generate summaries of web articles directly on your device, offering convenience and potentially even offline functionality. This potential new feature was uncovered by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority.

Gemini Nano, a smaller version of Google’s larger language models, is designed for processing short blocks of text. This capability makes it well-suited for on-device article summaries. It’s already powering features like conversation summaries in the Pixel Recorder app and smart replies in Gboard. Moving article summarization to on-device processing could boost speed and privacy for Pixel 8 Pro users.

Google’s current article summarization tool works in the cloud and is available on various Android devices. Bringing this feature to Gemini Nano could significantly expand its on-device AI capabilities. Since Google’s AI technology is also featured in devices like the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, it’s possible that those phones could also benefit from on-device article summaries. You can check out Mishaal’s article on the matter for all the technical details.

Google’s advancements with Gemini Nano showcase the growing potential of on-device AI. As these models become more adept at handling complex tasks, we can expect faster, more seamless, and potentially more private user experiences across a range of devices. Sadly, only Pixel 8 Pro users will benefit with this advancement since the Pixel 8 won’t be getting Gemini Nano.
