Some Google Pixel users, including those with the latest and greatest from Google, the Pixel 8 Pro, are facing overheating issues while recording videos or making video calls. However, this isn’t the first time Pixel phones have grappled with this problem, but there are some workarounds to consider if you’re encountering it.

According to user reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7), one culprit seems to be backing up videos over mobile data while recording. To combat this, Pixel owners can switch Google Photos backup to “Wi-Fi only” in their settings, reducing heat generation during the process. However, this solution doesn’t address overheating during video calls.

This workaround aligns with Google’s recommendations on its support page, where the tech giant acknowledges several potential causes of overheating on Pixel phones, including video recording and video calling. Google advises users to consider halting certain activities if their Pixel device begins to overheat, such as playing media, streaming shows over Wi-Fi or 5G, playing downloaded videos, using navigation apps for extended periods, or utilizing features or apps that consume a substantial amount of resources while charging the phone. They also offer several tips to keep your Pixel cool:

  • Avoid extreme heat: Don’t leave your phone in hot cars or direct sunlight.
  • Improve ventilation: Don’t keep your phone in stuffy cases or pockets.
  • Dim the display: Reduce screen brightness in your settings.
  • Use approved cases: Stick to cases designed for your specific Pixel model.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi: Whenever possible, prioritize Wi-Fi over mobile data.

You can also consider closing unnecessary apps since running multiple apps in the background can strain your phone’s resources. You are also advised to lower graphics setting especially if playing games or using graphically demanding apps. Heck, giving your phone time to cool down if it starts feeling warm could also do the trick.

As Google Pixel users navigate through these overheating concerns, these workarounds and preventive measures should help provide you with a more reliable and comfortable user experience. While Google may address these issues through future updates, for now, users can employ these solutions to alleviate overheating problems on their Pixel devices.
