Despite Google’s extensive efforts in promoting the Pixel 8 in Japan, recent data suggest a decline in sales for this flagship device. The tech giant left no stone unturned in marketing initiatives, collaborating with Kanta Mizutamari and featuring the much-hyped Best Take feature in local ads.

Renowned for its advanced AI capabilities and a promised 7-year Android upgrade commitment, the Pixel 8 emerged as the best Android phones of 2023. There’s probably no reason for anyone to not to buy this flagship phone if it falls under their budget.

Pixel 8 sales declined in the Japanese market

However, the recent sales data indicate a decline in smartphones’ popularity within the Japanese market. According to BCN Ranking, the vanilla Pixel 8 ranked fifth among the top 10 best-selling Android phones between December 11 and December 17, while the Pro variant wasn’t even on the list.

Meanwhile, Oppo Reno 10 Pro 5G claimed the top spot, closely followed by Xiaomi 13T. Even Samsung’s older flagship, Galaxy S22, surpassed the Pixel 8 by claiming the third position. Comparatively, the budget-friendly Pixel 7a did well during this period and was ranked at the fourth position, above the Pixel 8. Here’s the complete list of top 10 best-selling Android phones.

  1. OPPO Reno 10 Pro 5G (SoftBank)
  2. Xiaomi 13T
  3. Samsung Galaxy S22
  4. Google Pixel 7a (NTT docomo)
  5. Google Pixel 8 128GB (SoftBank)
  6. Google Pixel 8 128GB (au)
  7. Samsung Galaxy A23 5G
  8. Kyocera Easy Smart Phone 3
  9. Google Pixel 8 128GB (NTT docomo)

Despite the decline in sales in Japan, the Pixel 8 managed to secure three positions within the top 10 list. This indicates that the device still has a certain degree of popularity. Among the leading retailers for Pixel 8 sales during this period were SoftBank, au by KDDI, and NTT Docomo.
