NotebookLM is another of the many AI-powered apps and services that Google has been working on for a while, and now it is finally available to the US public, including new features to make it even more powerful.

US users can now access NotebookLM, the AI-powered notes service by Google

Those who were already eager to access NotebookLM are in luck, as it is now available in the US. Furthermore, to offer even better results and improved ‘understanding and reasoning’ possibilities, Google has integrated it with its latest Gemini Pro AI model.

Among its features is the ability to transform your created or generated notes into other types of documents, allowing you to choose how many notes you want to include in the new file in a simple way.

NotebookLM can even suggest different formats for the resulting file according to the type of content, although you can choose any you want among all the available options.

Furthermore, now you will also receive contextual suggestions as you write, both to potentially improve your writing and for data bits that could be useful to include in the note. Additionally, there are now more ‘source slots’, as you can save up to 20 sources and each note will have a maximum of 200,000 words.

What is NotebookLM and what can it do?

NotebookLM is a notes app not related to Google Keep, since it was intended from the beginning as an AI-powered service. This type of approach allows it to offer unique features that facilitate and automate the creation of notes thanks to generative AI.

The ‘LM’ in its name comes from the term LLM (Large language models), indicating its direct integration with machine learning models to improve its suggestions. NotebookLM was officially presented in mid-July, and there is still no date for the global rollout.

The app is quite powerful, being able to offer you a summary of long documents according to your particular needs. For example, Google claims that you could upload a scientific article on a topic (such as medicine) and ask NotebookLM to generate a glossary of key terms related to some term, such as ‘dopamine.’

Additionally, similar to powerful AI chatbots, you can ask it to generate a script for a video based on your general ideas, ask it to generate questions suitable for an interview on a particular topic, etc. In short, it is a service that goes far beyond taking notes, as it generates detailed content on which you can start working.

AI has taken the world by storm in recent years, and it is exciting that its possibilities are also available on our mobile devices, in the palm of our hands. Let’s hope that it won’t take long for the service to be available worldwide.
