A recently discovered patent suggests that Magic Compose, the AI-powered contextual response-generating tool integrated into Google Messages, could soon receive even more advanced input suggestions, so you can get key information and media suggestions related to your conversations directly in the app without switching to another. The report (from Websiterating and David from @xleaks7) notes that the patent was filed on September 23, 2023, but was recently published on January 11, 2024.

Let’s say you’re having a conversation with your friends via Google Messages about some place you visited a while ago and they want to go again. However, the place has a complicated name and nobody remembers exactly what it’s called so everyone tries to write it committing typos. In those cases, you would have to exit the Messages app to find the place in your Maps location history. Well, the new system described in the patent seeks to avoid that.

In the previous case, if the visit to the place was recorded in the location history of your Google account, then Magic Compose could suggest its correct name along with related details (such as its website or contact information) based on its interpretation of what you and your friends tried to write. This seems similar to the Chrome search bar smart suggestions that Google recently announced, but for places instead of websites.

The tool could offer contextual suggestions of all kinds to your Google Messages chats

The patent also indicates that, when making plans to go out to eat with someone through Google Messages, Magic Compose could be able to quickly suggest places or locations related to that plan or any other plan you were talking about. This way, you wouldn’t have to go to Google Maps to search for places to go.

The new tool could also be useful to streamline media sharing by being able to suggest which photos or videos to send according to the conversation. For example, if you are talking about sharing photos or videos you took at a specific location, Magic Compose would suggest media items that are geo-tagged with that location.

Basically, the patent describes a tool that aims to maximize efficiency while you chat with others through Google Messages. However, since it is a patent, it is not known when it could be implemented in the app or if it will ever be implemented. But, seeing the company’s focus on AI-powered features, it is likely that we will at least see something similar in the future.
