Google continues working on ‘revamping’ its messaging app, now renaming it to ‘Google Messages’. Before that, the app had the name ‘Messages by Google’, but it was already known among the community as ‘Google Messages’ even though it was not its official name yet.

‘Messages by Google’ app officially renamed to ‘Google Messages’

Google has been putting a lot of importance on its Messages app for weeks, implementing several new features like a ‘public profile‘ system, and now officially naming it ‘Google Messages’. Does the already-confirmed RCS integration with iMessage have anything to do with it? It is possible.

What was previously just another alternative in the competitive messaging segment now seems to want to capture many users of other, much more popular services. It will be a tough task, but the Google team seems convinced to develop more and more features that put it at the same level (or above) as others that are far ahead of it.

The simplification of the name to ‘Google Messages’ could be either to make it more marketing-friendly or adapt it to how the user community already calls it. Be that as it may, now you can find the section dedicated to the app in the Play Store under that name.

‘Custom Bubbles’ feature in development

Additionally, a recent report revealed that Google is working on a ‘Custom Bubbles’ feature for its Messages app. This will allow you to customize the colors of the conversations with up to 9 themes, and the color you choose will be synchronized between the platforms you use the service. A fully functional version has not yet been deployed even in the beta version, so it could still take some weeks to arrive.

Also, it is not yet known if the company will do something similar with other apps that follow naming schemes similar to the previous Google Messages one. For instance, will the ‘Phone by Google’ app be renamed to ‘Google Phone’? There is still nothing confirmed about it.

Seeing everything that has been happening lately around Google Messages, it will be interesting to see what Google has in store for the future of its messaging service.
