Google Maps is undoubtedly the most popular navigation app of all time. It is so popular that the app was downloaded more than 23 million times in 2020 in the US alone.

Thanks to years of satellite data collected by the Mountain View-based tech giant, Google Maps is fairly accurate with many trusting the app for daily commute. Owing to its popularity, the developers always work on bringing in new features and improving existing ones.

But these occasional updates and features sometimes cause bugs and glitches with the service. An example of the same is the recently reported issue where the search function was not working for some.

That being said, it looks like another issue with Google Maps Street View functionality has surfaced. Many users are complaining that after the September update, the Street View is broken and has significantly less coverage than it previously had.

This is troublesome for those relied on Street View to find things since it has disappeared entirely in many cities throughout the world.

It appears that Google’s Street View imagery for Vietnam has been removed (there used to be coverage for Hanoi, Hue and a few other cities in the country). Is this a technical issue? Imagery for South Korea was removed for a brief time earlier this month but was eventually restored.

Up until recently we had official Google street view coverage in 10 Vietnamese cities – Hô Chi Minh City, Mỹ Tho, Sông Cầu, Huế, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hạ Long, Bắc Ninh, Thái Nguyên and Yên Bái. However, recently after a new update to Street View in September, all the Vietnamese coverage suddenly disappeared. I was wondering if this was on purpose or by accident. For reference, the Vietnamese coverage was released in April 2020. Other than that, other coverage disappeared too, including newest generation camera Switzerland update, and bits and pieces of old coverage everywhere with a lot of roads and some cities completely broken (e.g. Orsk in Russia, road A122 in Nigeria, a lot of Kenya, etc).

People were confused since almost all of Vietnam’s cities that had street viewed suddenly disappeared with people all around the world complaining about the same.

Thankfully, an engineer who is on the Google Maps team said they were aware of the issue and created a bug tracker concerning the same.

Hi there, I’m a Google engineer with the Maps Platform. We’re aware of this issue. I’ve just created https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/204903434 to follow-up with updates as required.

With the Street View affecting users worldwide for the last two months, many said that the service has become unusable for them. We hope the Google Maps team fixes the Street View issue in the coming days.

In the meantime, we will keep an eye out on this one and update the article once more information is available.
