Google has recently begun testing a new color scheme for the background map layer on Google Maps.

Those who are a part of this testing phase have also noticed changes in the color palette of directions, nature areas, roads, and water.

However, the company has come under heavy criticism for the newly introduced color scheme on the platform.

Google Maps new color scheme for maps gets criticized

By looking at the reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), it appears that several users are unhappy with the recently introduced alterations. They claim that the color scheme looks quite unpleasant.

Users allege that the colors are overly saturated, making it difficult for one to properly view the map. They have also observed that the recent modification is only visible on some of their accounts.

People contend that the color palette returns to its original state when they log out and use the platform as it is or switch to another account.

They have also noted instances where the modification will only appear on the official Android app. As per the claims, the web portal still displays the maps in the old palette on both desktops and smartphones.

Interestingly, this happens even when one is signed in to the same account everywhere.

Although a few are asking Google to discard the new ‘modernized’ design completely. And this is because they are now unable to distinguish certain areas.

As of 1 Sept 2023 in Australia, the colours in Google Maps have all changed. Streets and roads are now a blue colour, suburbs with some tree cover are now obfuscated in a green shading, and overall my ability to read and use Google Maps has suddenly become very inferior.

To make matters worse, the recent modifications to the roads appearance also make it difficult for them to navigate while driving.

Users claim that the palette on Google Maps defaults to the new one even after clearing the app cache, and uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Not sure what exactly I did. But this only happens to individual accounts. The color became blue/green mainly. How do I switch it back to default? My other account has no issue with the default color.

According to a Google Product Expert, this change is experimental and currently accessible to only a handful of users. And it is uncertain whether these modifications will be introduced in an upcoming update or not.

Users want option to revert

Disgruntled users are now requesting the developers to introduce an option to revert to the old color scheme.

Such an option will make it easy for them to adjust the color scheme as per their preferences and help them navigate better.

For the time being, those impacted can also try using the platform in satellite mode, as it remains unchanged.
