Google Messages app is giving Samsung phone users some headaches. It seems that, for some time, the application does not allow distinguishing well between unread and read SMS.

Many users are reporting this problem (1, 2, 3, 4). The main issue seems to be the font that Google uses to distinguish the unread messages from those already read.

Anyway, Samsung phone users seem to be the most affected, but the problem would not be exclusive to them. Among the reports, one of the Pixel 4a 5G phone users pointed out they’re also facing this problem.

The owner of the Pixel 4a 5G and other users who also replied to the report confirmed that it all started after receiving a recent update to the Google Messages app.

A potential workaround

A user discovered a workaround that can work for people affected by the problem while they wait for the official fix.

Basically, the workaround consists of going to the system settings, then to the section from which you can change the font, and checking if you have the ‘Bold font’ selected. If ‘Bold font’ is on, turn it off.

Anyway, there are many users who consider that the ‘Bold font’ is more comfortable to read, and that is why they keep it activated. Then, deactivating it just to better identify received SMS would affect all the experience.

But, if you don’t mind having the ‘Bold font’ disabled, this method can help you while Google resolves the issue.

It should be noted that this workaround is not the ‘ultimate fix’. Users point out that it is still a bit difficult to distinguish unread new messages from those already read.

A Galaxy Note 20 Ultra user contributes to the report showing that, after trying to change the font or deactivating ‘Bold Font’, there is still some difficulty when it comes to distinguishing between unread and read SMS.

Google is aware of the issue with Messages on Samsung phones

Anyway, Google is already aware of the problem. A Google product expert reveals that the development team invites users to submit feedback on the matter. So, they can research it and work on a solution.

While the issue could reportedly be resolved by adjusting the font of the letters in Google Messages app, for now, those affected have to wait for the developers to see what is causing the glitch and fix the same.
