Google is preparing to add a Sports widget to the Google app for Android. The widget will display upcoming, live, and past matches for teams that you follow. You can customize the teams you follow via the widget settings page, but the Sports widget is currently in the Google app v14.49.38.29 beta.

In an APK teardown, 9to5Google discovered that the Google app will present each match as a card with essential details like date, time, score, and league. Tapping on a card opens the corresponding Knowledge Graph card in Google Search, providing a deeper dive into match information. For someone who often keeps tabs on Chelsea FC live scores through the Google app when not on the big screen, this should be a handy tool for me and many others.

The widget offers two customizable layouts: a one-column layout for a concise overview and a two-column layout that prominently features a single match at the top as well as two views: “Your games” and “Trending games.” To get the most up to date live scores, you can refresh the widget from the top-right corner where you see “Last updated.” It’s also possible to resize the widget to your preference, even expanding it to fill your entire homescreen. The widget settings page also lets you select the teams you want to follow. Additionally, you’ll receive personalized “Recommendations” for games, teams, and leagues based on your search activity.

The widget seamlessly blends with your default theme thanks to Dynamic Color integration. Its design echoes the simplicity and ease of access of the Finance Watchlist widget from earlier this year, further expanding the Search app’s capabilities.

The Sports widget is available with Google app version 14.49.38.29, so keep an eye out for its wider release to Android devices soon.
